Working of CDN


Google Cloud Media CDN has three major components to work between the Downstream user agent and Upstream origin.

  • Downstream Agent (User Agent): The downstream agent, also known as the user agent, represents the end-user’s device or client application, such as a web browser or a media player. When a user requests media content, the downstream agent sends the request to the Google Cloud Media CDN.
  • Router: The router is the core component of a Google Cloud Media CDN. Its primary function is to intelligently route user requests to the most appropriate edge server based on proximity and server availability. When a user requests media content, the router evaluates the user’s location and selects the edge server geographically closest to the user. By doing so, the router minimizes the data travel distance, which reduces latency and ensures faster content delivery.
  • Cache: The cache component is where the Google Cloud Media CDN stores copies of frequently accessed media content, such as videos, images, and audio files. When the edge server receives a user request, it checks if the requested content is cached locally. If the content is in the cache, the edge server can quickly deliver it to the user without needing to fetch it from the origin Caching popular and commonly requested content at various edge locations is a fundamental optimization strategy of a CDN. This approach significantly reduces the load on the origin server and improves response times for subsequent requests.
  • Cache Filler: The cache filler populates the cache with the most relevant and popular media content. It monitors user access patterns and identifies which content is being requested frequently. Based on this analysis, the cache filler proactively fetches and stores the identified content in the cache across different edge locations. It continuously monitors the origin server for changes or updates to media files and replicates this content to the edge servers as needed. By efficiently filling the cache with the right content, the cache filler enhances the chances of delivering content directly from the edge servers, reducing latency and improving overall performance.
  • Upstream Agent (Origin Server): The upstream agent, also known as the origin server, represents the source of the media content. It is the central repository where all media files are stored. When the cache filler identifies the need to fetch a specific media file, it communicates with the upstream agent to request the content. The upstream agent then provides the requested media file to the cache filler, which, in turn, stores it in the cache for quicker access in the future.
