Overview
In most engineering teams, creating an Amazon S3 bucket should be simple, but in reality, it rarely is. We have often seen teams blocked by naming conflicts when trying to create buckets like prod-data or app-backups, only to discover that completely unrelated AWS accounts already take those names.
At scale, this becomes more than just an inconvenience. Amazon S3’s global namespace has historically forced teams into long, inconsistent naming conventions, impacting automation, governance, and overall developer velocity.
AWS has now addressed this challenge by introducing account regional namespaces for Amazon S3 general-purpose buckets, helping clarify how the feature works in practice and what it means for teams managing cloud infrastructure at scale.

Introduction
If you have worked in a multi-account AWS setup, you have likely run into the limitations of Amazon S3’s global namespace. Every bucket name had to be globally unique across all accounts and regions, leading to awkward naming patterns and unnecessary complexity.
From a platform engineering perspective, this wasn’t just a naming issue. It created inconsistencies across environments, complicated infrastructure-as-code setups, and introduced friction in CI/CD pipelines.
With the introduction of account regional namespaces for Amazon S3 general-purpose buckets, AWS is aligning Amazon S3 more closely with how modern cloud architectures are designed, multi-account, environment-isolated, and automation-first.
Account Regional Namespaces
Previously, Amazon S3 bucket names existed in a single global namespace. This meant two different AWS accounts could not have a bucket with the same name, regardless of region.
With the new namespace feature, you can now create general purpose buckets in your own account regional namespace — a reserved subdivision of the global namespace that only your account can create buckets in. The bucket name only needs to be unique within your AWS account and region combination.
This fundamentally shifts Amazon S3 from a globally constrained service to one that better aligns with modern multi-account architectures, where isolation and repeatability are key.
How Does the Naming Convention Work?
General purpose buckets in your account regional namespace follow a specific naming convention. The bucket name consists of:
- A bucket name prefix that you choose
- A suffix containing your 12-digit AWS Account ID, the AWS Region code, and ending with -an

For example, if your AWS Account ID is 111122223333 and you want to create a bucket in ap-south-1:

How Does It Work in Practice?
In practice, most teams won’t be creating these buckets manually via CLI, they will adopt this through infrastructure-as-code using tools like AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, or AWS CDK.
AWS CLI
Here’s how an account regional namespace bucket is created using the AWS CLI:

Key points:
- The –bucket value must include the full name with the account regional suffix.
- The –bucket-namespace value is account-regional (lowercase, hyphenated).
- You must specify the –region and LocationConstraint for regions other than us-east-1.
AWS CloudFormation
CloudFormation offers two approaches using pseudo parameters AWS::AccountId and AWS::Region:

The BucketNamePrefix approach is simpler, you provide only your chosen prefix, and CloudFormation automatically appends the account ID, region, and -an suffix.

Accessing Account Regional Namespace Buckets
Account regional namespace buckets use the standard S3 endpoint formats. There is no new or special endpoint structure. The account ID and region are embedded in the bucket name itself, not in the endpoint URL.

When using AWS SDKs or the CLI, you reference the bucket using its full name including the suffix:

Enforcing Account Regional Namespace Usage
Security teams can enforce that all new buckets are created in the account regional namespace using the s3:x-amz-bucket-namespace condition key. This can be applied through IAM policies, Service Control Policies (SCPs), and Resource Control Policies (RCPs).

- Cleaner, meaningful naming — No more clunky naming hacks like mycompany-prod-data-ap-south-1-2024. Your prefix can reflect purpose (prod-data, app-backups), while the suffix handles uniqueness automatically.
- Consistency across environments — The same prefix (e.g., prod-data) can be used across dev, staging, and production accounts without collisions, since each account has its own namespace.
- Permanent ownership — Unlike global namespace buckets where deleted names become available to anyone, account regional namespace bucket names can never be re-created by another account, even after deletion. This eliminates bucket takeover risks.
- Improved governance at scale — Enforce namespace usage via IAM, SCPs, and RCPs across your organization using the s3:x-amz-bucket-namespace condition key.
- Simplified automation — CI/CD pipelines can use a consistent prefix and programmatically construct the full name using the account ID and region, removing the need for globally unique name generation logic.
Things to Consider Before Adopting
While this is a welcome improvement, it’s not a drop-in replacement for existing setups.
- No automatic migration — Existing buckets remain in the global namespace. You cannot rename existing global buckets to account regional namespace names. Moving to namespaced buckets requires creating new buckets and migrating data using S3 Replication. AWS has published a dedicated migration guide.
- Character limit impact — The account regional suffix consumes characters from the 63-character bucket name limit. Depending on your region code length, you may have as few as 36–37 characters for your prefix.
- Region availability — Account regional namespace buckets can be created in all AWS Regions except Middle East (Bahrain) and Middle East (UAE).
- Tooling compatibility — Ensure your infrastructure tools (Terraform, SDKs, internal frameworks) support the –bucket-namespace / BucketNamespace parameter. Older SDK versions may need updating.
- Cross-account access patterns — If you rely heavily on cross-account bucket access, validate how the new naming convention affects your bucket policies, IAM roles, and resource ARNs.
- Other bucket types already scoped — Amazon S3 table buckets and vector buckets already exist in an account-level namespace, and Amazon S3 directory buckets exist in a zonal namespace. This feature brings general purpose buckets in line with those.
Conclusion
The introduction of account regional namespaces for Amazon S3 general purpose buckets is a long-overdue improvement that removes one of the most persistent friction points in Amazon S3. For teams operating in multi-account environments, this is more than just a naming convenience, it’s an enabler for cleaner architecture, better governance, and more predictable automation.
That said, adoption should be intentional. Evaluate integration points, tooling compatibility, and access patterns before rolling this out broadly. For new workloads, however, namespace-scoped buckets should be strongly considered the default approach moving forward.

1. Will my existing Amazon S3 buckets be affected by this change?
ANS: – No. Existing buckets remain in the global namespace and continue to function exactly as before. The new feature is opt-in.
2. Can I use the same bucket name prefix in different AWS regions?
ANS: – Yes. Since the full bucket name includes the region code in the suffix, the same prefix (e.g., prod-data) can be used across multiple regions within your account. For example:

3. Do I need to update my applications?
