OpenStack turns 4

OpenStack turned Four this month. Happy 4th Birthday OpenStack !!

From an initiative back in 2010 by NASA & Rackspace to a worldwide community of 17670 members and 70 user groups across 140 countries and 391 Organizations involved is a laudable achievement in 4 years.

Termed as the year of the SuperUser, on this birthday industry leaders talked about their work around OpenStack in their organizations and share the knowledge they have gained during this process. Visit superuser.openstack.org for videos, presentations and user stories.

Factors like re-usability of existing server infrastructure, being able to use Commodity Hardware, comparatively lower cost of setup as compared to other private cloud options, improved performance, latency (since its private) and agility makes OpenStack all the more attractive for businesses / enterprises to adopt and it is only set to grow in the coming years with so many improvisations & new features being incorporated into it.

Some of the notable ones to keep an eye are:

OpenStack is already being used by many companies for production purposes and there are already many others who are beyond the early adoption phase. See OpenStack user stories for more. And these companies are not just IT companies but from other sectors as well like Telecom, Finance & Media.

OpenStack has also achieved a place for itself as a preferred software for private cloud in Academic and Research oriented institutions and companies

And from a knowledge and career perspective there is definitely an increased number of knowledge sharing sessions happening around OpenStack in the form of presentations, meetups, professional training & hands-on sessions because of the need for OpenStack professionals.

Here’s wishing OpenStack much more success and many more Birthday parties. Visit https://www.openstack.org/birthday to get a badge and join the celebration.
