How to take file-based Backup of your vCenter?

Objective

The goal of this lab is to provide hands-on experience on configuring file-based backup of your vCenter.

Prerequisites

  • Installation, Configuration Skill of vCenter
  • Basic understanding of vCenter Inventory
  • Access to a vCenter Server Appliance Management Interface (VAMI)
  • FTP Server – To take back up

Lab Overview

After completing this lab, you will be able to configure your vSphere environment to take / schedule file-based backup of your vCenter inventory on FTP server. This back up files are very much useful in case of failure / crashing of your vCenter, that is your centralized management interface of all hosts & Clusters, VM & Templates, Storages and Networking objects. In this lab, you will be:

  1. Exploring license services from vCenter
  2. Add license keys to vCenter Inventory
  3. Assign vSphere license to vCenter & ESXi Server

Validate or verify vCenter 7 ESXi host licenses

Step-by-Step Lab Guide

  1. Access vCenter Server Appliance Management Interface (VAMI) and Login using credentials.
  2. As we are going to take backup in FTP Server, make sure you have one FTP server preconfigured as a Backup Server.
  3. Return to VAMI & Click Back Up.
  4. Next to Activity, Click on BACKUP NOW
  5. Fill out the required details of backup server.
  6. Cross verify the status of backup.
  7. We can also schedule the vCenter Backup on desired day and time.
  8. Let us create Automatic Backup schedule on every Saturday 11:59 PM (Weekly Backup)
  9. Review your Backup Schedule.
