Objective
This lab aims to guide you in migrating a VM from one datastore to another.
Revolutionize Your Data Center with VMware
- Understand new features
- Best practices available
- Instructor led courses
Prerequisites
- Access of vCenter through vSphere Web Client
- Basic understanding of vCenter Inventory
- Minimum Two ESXi Servers in the vCenter
- Should know why we have to migrate between datastores
- Knowledge of vSphere Storage vMotion
Pre-configured vMotion Network shared Storage between two hosts
Overview
- Understand the need for migration
- Able to Configure vSphere Storage vMotion
- Migrate VM from one datastore to another datastore
- Verify the Migration and Review
Step-by-Step Lab Guide
- Open vCenter using vSphere Client. For our demonstration, we take Ubuntu Server from the sa-ESXi-01 host. Check that the current datastore of the Ubuntu Server is VMFS01-01.

- Verify that at least one shared datastore must be present between all hosts of your vCenter inventory. Here we have iSCSI-Datastore, which is shared Storage. Hence, we will migrate our Ubuntu Server from VMFS01-01 to iSCSI-Datastore. Click on Storage, go to iSCSI-Datastore & Click on Hosts Tab. We can see here iSCSI-Datastore is shared between both sa-ESXi-01 and sa-ESXi-02 hosts.

- Right-Click on Ubuntu Server and click on – Migrate.

- Select migration type = Change storage only

- Select iSCSI-Datastore as target storage and Disk Provisioning type = Thin and Click on NEXT.

- Review all details and click on the FINISH button.

- Click Ubuntu Server and Go to Datastore under the Host and Cluster tab. You can see the datastore changes from VMFS01-01 to iSCSI-Datastore storage migration successfully.
