Boost AI Reliability with Amazon Nova’s Built-In Web Grounding Feature

Voiced by Amazon Polly

In the rapidly evolving world of generative AI, being smart isn’t enough. Modern applications need to be accurate, current and trustworthy. That’s where Amazon Nova’s Web Grounding comes in: a powerful capability that helps AI models provide real-time, verifiable information without building complex retrieval systems.

Web Grounding represents a meaningful step forward in Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). Instead of developers integrating search APIs, maintaining indexing systems or orchestrating custom retrieval logic, Nova models can now automatically decide when and what to search based on user context. The result is grounded, up-to-date responses with source citations that improve trust and reduce hallucinations.

What is Web Grounding?

Web Grounding is a native feature in Amazon Nova foundation models that lets them fetch and integrate live public information into their responses. Rather than relying solely on pre-trained knowledge, Nova can determine when to perform a web search, retrieve relevant content and cite sources- all on the fly.

This means:

  • No separate retrieval infrastructure
  • No custom indexing
  • No orchestration of search queries
  • Automatic citation of public sources
  • Substantial reduction in hallucinations

In short, developers receive a turnkey RAG solution that is natively powered within the model inference workflow.

Why Developers Should Use Web Grounding

Grounding the model in real-time data is especially useful when accuracy matters. Here are some ideal use cases:

  • Knowledge-based AI Assistants: Tasks requiring accurate updates about products, services, AWS Regions, prices, events or any constantly evolving dataset.
  • Customer Support Bots: Support applications need reliable responses with transparent source attribution.
  • Research Assistants: Applications that synthesize information across multiple public documents can rely on Web Grounding to fetch and cross-reference data.
  • Content Generation with Fact Verification: Writers, analysts and editors gain AI outputs backed by external citations, reducing the risk of fabrication.
  • Hallucination-sensitive Use Cases: When transparency, reliability and explainability matter, grounding becomes essential.

Web Grounding is tightly integrated into the inference pipeline of Amazon Nova Premier, the first model to support the capability. To use Web Grounding in your Bedrock-based app, set up your API call like this:

When Nova handles your prompt:

  1. It checks whether external information will help.
  2. If yes, it runs a web search.
  3. It may run multiple searches if needed.
  4. It synthesizes the gathered content and cites sources in its response.
  5. The output also comes with “reasoning traces,” revealing when grounding was triggered.

The response returned to the developer includes:

  • A grounded, evidence-backed answer.
  • A set of citations pointing to the web sources used.
  • Reasoning traces showing when Web Grounding was triggered
  • Intermediate content from web searches that remains hidden from the final user for clarity and safety.

This design keeps the user experience seamless while giving developers visibility over how the model gathered information.

Why Web Grounding Matters

  • Reduces Hallucinations: By incorporating real-world evidence into the reasoning process.
  • Automatic Citations: Improves compliance and enhances user trust.
  • Eliminates Retrieval Complexity: No RAG pipeline, indexing, orchestration or custom search logic required.
  • Improves Developer Productivity: Developers can focus on building user experiences rather than AI plumbing.

Building Trustworthy AI

As generative AI enters real-world production, accuracy and trust are just as important as intelligence. Amazon Nova’s Web Grounding makes this possible by embedding live, cited web information directly into the model’s response flow, without the complexity of custom RAG pipelines or search infrastructure.

By reducing hallucinations, improving transparency and accelerating development, Web Grounding enables teams to build AI systems that are not only smart, but reliable and explainable. For any AI application where correctness matters, Web Grounding provides a strong foundation for production-ready, trustworthy AI.
