In contemporary 5G networks, consumers and companies want extremely conscious experiences. However, data transmission through 5G frequently requires switching between many networks to change application servers. The delay in data transfer on busy 5G mobile networks can reduce users’ interest. As a remedy, AWS has introduced the AWS Wavelength. Utilizing well-known AWS settings and resources, one may build and extend apps closer to the users with AWS Wavelength, resulting in creative 5G applications and future user interfaces.
Introduction to AWS Wavelength
An AWS Foundation offering designed for mobile end computing is called AWS Wavelength. Application traffic from 5G projects must transfer application servers throughout the Wavelength Zones of the telecom network. The AWS infrastructure deployments known as Wavelength Zones deploy AWS storage and compute support in (CSP) data stations at the 5G network’s hub. It helps users utilize the advantages of latency and bandwidth provided by the current 5G networks by preventing the latency that would arise from application traffic needing to make additional hops outside of the Internet to reach its destination.
Developers can create applications with ultra-low latencies for end users’ mobile devices using AWS Wavelength. The 5G edge networks of communications service providers (CSPs) are equipped with computation and storage resources deployed by Wavelength. A Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) can be expanded to a Wavelength Zone or Zones. The applications that require a connection to AWS and the exceptionally low latency services available in the Region can then be deployed using AWS resources like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
Helping organizations transform their IT infrastructure with top-notch Cloud Computing services
- Cloud Migration
- AIML & IoT
- Wavelength – A new kind of AWS infrastructure was created to support workloads on mobile networks that demand ultra-low latency.
- Wavelength Zone – A zone where the Wavelength infrastructure is set up at the carrier location. An AWS Region has linked Wavelength Zones. The control plane in the Region is responsible for managing a Wavelength Zone, which is a logical extension of the Region.
- VPC – A customer’s Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) spread over Availability Zones, Local Zones, and Wavelength Zones and has resources like Amazon EC2 instances deployed in the subnets connected to the zones.
- Wavelength Subnet – A Subnet you build within a Wavelength zone is a Wavelength Subnet. AWS services like Amazon EC2 instances can be used and managed in one or more subnets you create.
- Carrier gateway – A carrier gateway fulfills two tasks. It permits outward traffic to the internet and carrier network and inward traffic from a specific carrier network.
- Network Border Group – A unique collection of Local Zones, Wavelength Zones, or Availability Zones from which AWS promotes IP addresses.
- Wavelength application – This software allows you to run in a Wavelength Zone on an AWS resource.
Working with AWS Wavelength
Features of AWS Wavelength
- A wide variety of compute instances for general use, gaming, and machine learning inference is supported by Wavelength Zones.
- AWS Wavelength helps VPC and Carrier Gateway connectivity to 5G networks.
- It supports persistent block storage to give the ability to take a snapshot, encrypt data, and restore it without affecting speed.
- Workloads in Wavelength Zones can be operated and managed using various AWS management and monitoring tools.
Use cases for AWS Wavelength
- Connected Automobiles
An increasingly crucial platform for allowing features like intelligent driving, real-time HD mapping, and improved road safety is cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X). Real-time data monitoring from sensors on the vehicle is made possible by low-latency access to the compute infrastructure required to execute data processing and analytics on AWS Wavelength. Secure communication, in-car telematics, and autonomous driving are achieved as a result.
- Global 5G Network
To provide ultra-low latency reinforcements for end users and linked devices worldwide, Wavelength will be possible within CSP channels like Vodafone, KDDI, Verizon, and SK Telecom in Europe, Japan, the United States, and Korea.
- Entertainment and Media
Wavelength offers the ultra-low latency required to integrate interactive experiences into live video streams, high-resolution stream video, and high-fidelity audio. Real-time statistics can be produced using real-time video analytics, which improves the experience of watching live events.
- Smart factories
Applications for industrial automation use Machine Learning (ML) inference at the edge to evaluate photos and videos to find quality problems on fast-moving assembly lines and initiate corrective actions. Wavelength enables the deployment of these applications without the need for pricey, GPU-based servers on the production line.
- Real-time Gaming
Low latency is necessary for real-time game streaming to maintain the user experience. To make the most powerful computational games accessible on end devices with little processing power, Wavelength allows you to stream them from Wavelength Zones.
Doctors can diagnose detected problems more quickly by using AI/ML-driven video analytics and image-matching tools, such as recognizing polyps. The response is sent back to the surgeon’s medical device after the image or video feeds from medical devices have been examined in a Wavelength Zone.
- Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
AR/VR apps can decrease the Motion to Photon (MTP) latencies to the level required to provide a realistic user experience by using compute resources on AWS Wavelength. Wavelength enables you to offer AR/VR in areas where running local system servers is not feasible.
Pricing of AWS Wavelength
AWS Wavelength provides mobile edge computing infrastructure for building and scaling ultra-low-latency applications by integrating AWS compute and storage services into 5G networks. To design and deploy apps for 5G edge devices, you can create AWS resources like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances and Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes. Select the AWS Region and opt into an AWS Wavelength Zone in the console.
- There will be a price difference between AWS resources in WZs and the parent region.
- Only on-demand EC2 instances are available in WZs.
- You can use Wavelength Zones with your instance savings plan.
AWS helps customers by giving up a consistent experience to keep apps with moderate latency or local data processing requirements wherever they need to distribute them. The enhancements to an AWS Region known as Wavelength Zones allow us to continue using the same AWS devices and capabilities we do today. Additionally, it minimizes the need to modify the program to reduce latency for end users.

Drop a query if you have any questions regarding AWS Wavelength and I will get back to you quickly.
1. When and who should use AWS Wavelength?
ANS: – When it comes to deploying high-performance apps for mobile end users and devices that demand single-digit millisecond latency, AWS Wavelength is the best option. Wavelength enables AWS companies to reach end users with millisecond-level connections when developing public apps like game streaming and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) services, improving user experience and application speed. Wavelength offers low-latency solutions for use cases including the Internet of Things (IoT), live stream production, and industrial automation to AWS commercial customers. Customers can utilize Wavelength to perform low-latency operations and processing precisely where their data is generated if they have demands for edge data processing such as image and video recognition, inference, data aggregation, and responsive analytics. As a result, less data needs to be moved for processing.
2. Is it possible to reserve Amazon EC2 capacity in a Wavelength Zone?
ANS: – To reserve space for your Amazon EC2 instances in a Wavelength Zone, use On-Demand Capacity Reservations.
3. How to use Application Load Balancer in AWS Wavelength Zone?
ANS: – We can use only the US region’s Application Load Balancer. In Wavelength Zones, an Application Load Balancer located in AWS Regions outside of the US is not permitted.
