Amazon EC2 X8i Instances: A New Benchmark for Memory-Intensive Workloads on AWS

Voiced by Amazon Polly

AWS continues to push the boundaries of cloud performance, and the general availability of Amazon EC2 X8i instances marks a significant milestone for customers running memory-intensive workloads. Announced officially on the AWS Blog in January 2026, X8i instances are designed to deliver exceptional compute power, massive memory capacity, and industry-leading performance for enterprise applications such as SAP HANA, large databases, analytics platforms, and electronic design automation (EDA).

Custom Intel Xeon 6 Processors on AWS

At the core of EC2 X8i instances are custom Intel Xeon 6 processors, built exclusively for AWS. These processors operate at a sustained all-core turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz, enabling consistent high performance across demanding workloads. Unlike generic cloud CPUs, these custom processors are optimized to deliver both compute efficiency and memory throughput at scale.

AWS positions X8i instances as the highest-performing Intel-based memory-optimized instances in the cloud, making them particularly attractive for organizations that rely on Intel architecture for software certification, licensing, or performance predictability.

Built for Memory-Intensive Workloads

Memory capacity and bandwidth are often the primary bottlenecks for large-scale enterprise workloads. EC2 X8i instances address this challenge by offering up to 6 TB of RAM, 1.5x the memory capacity of previous-generation X2i instances. In addition, X8i delivers 3.4x higher memory bandwidth, allowing applications to process data faster and more efficiently.

These capabilities make X8i instances ideal for in-memory databases, large-scale transactional systems, analytics platforms, and other workloads that demand both high compute power and a large memory footprint.

Performance Gains Over Previous Generations

The architectural improvements in X8i instances translate directly into measurable performance gains. According to AWS benchmarks, X8i instances deliver up to 43% higher overall performance than X2i instances, with even greater gains for specific real-world workloads.

SAP Application Performance Standard (SAPS) scores improve by up to 50%, PostgreSQL workloads run up to 47% faster, and in-memory caching solutions such as Memcached achieve up to 88% performance gains. Even AI inference workloads benefit, with improvements of up to 46%, making X8i suitable for a wide range of data-intensive and latency-sensitive applications.

Customer Success During Preview Phase

During the preview phase introduced at AWS re:Invent 2025, early adopters validated the performance and scalability of X8i instances. Customers running RISE with SAP leveraged the full 6 TB of memory to significantly accelerate SAP HANA transaction processing and query execution, improving responsiveness for mission-critical business operations.

Another example is Orion, which optimized SQL Server deployments by reducing the number of active cores on X8i instances while maintaining required performance thresholds. This optimization resulted in a 50% reduction in SQL Server licensing costs, demonstrating that X8i instances deliver both performance and cost-efficiency benefits.

X8i Instance Types and Sizing Options

EC2 X8i instances are available in 14 sizes, ranging from smaller configurations suitable for development and testing to massive-scale deployments for enterprise production workloads. The lineup includes three large instance sizes, 48xlarge, 64xlarge, and 96xlarge, as well as two bare metal options: metal-48xl and metal-96xl.

Bare metal instances are particularly valuable for workloads that require direct access to physical hardware, specialized licensing models, or strict compliance requirements.

Networking, Storage, and Bandwidth Capabilities

X8i instances offer powerful networking and storage capabilities to support demanding enterprise workloads. They provide up to 100 Gbps of network bandwidth and up to 80 Gbps of throughput to Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS).

Support for Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) enables low-latency, high-throughput networking, making X8i instances well-suited for tightly coupled workloads, high-performance databases, and large-scale data processing environments.

AWS Nitro System and Instance Bandwidth Configuration

X8i instances are built on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro system, which offloads virtualization, storage, and networking functions to dedicated hardware. This architecture enhances performance consistency while improving security and isolation.

In addition, X8i instances support Instance Bandwidth Configuration (IBC), allowing customers to flexibly allocate bandwidth between networking and Amazon EBS. By scaling bandwidth by up to 25%, organizations can fine-tune performance for database I/O, analytics queries, and logging workloads without changing instance types.

Regional Availability and Pricing Models

Amazon EC2 X8i instances are now available in key AWS Regions, including US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Frankfurt). AWS offers multiple purchasing options: On-Demand Instances, Savings Plans, and Spot Instances, allowing customers to balance cost, flexibility, and availability based on their workload requirements.

Future of Memory Computing

With Amazon EC2 X8i instances, AWS delivers a compelling platform for enterprises that demand extreme memory capacity, high compute performance, and predictable scalability. By combining custom Intel Xeon 6 processors, massive memory bandwidth, and advanced AWS infrastructure features, X8i sets a new benchmark for memory-optimized workloads in the cloud. For organizations running SAP, large databases, or data-intensive applications, X8i instances represent a powerful and future-ready choice on AWS.
