Microsoft Power BI has been one of the most in-demand business intelligence tools worldwide for quite some time. Now that more companies are switching to Microsoft Fabric and Power BI for their analytics needs, demand for Microsoft Power BI training is surging. And not to mention, people with excellent Power BI skills also see excellent career opportunities as well.
For people who want to learn Power BI, there are only two courses from Microsoft that are exclusive to Power BI – DP 605 and PL 300. However, in the training industry, it is observed that some people choose the wrong Power BI course, unaware of what each course offers.
In this blog, we are making it very clear what each course is meant for, and which course you should take up if you want to learn Power BI.

Understanding PL-300 Course
PL-300 course, recently renamed as ‘Design and manage analytics solutions using Power BI’, is an associate-level, role-based certification course from Microsoft and is the only certification course purely based on Power BI, as of now. This is a 3-day course. This course is intended for Data and BI professionals who want to improve their Power BI skills and earn certification.
High-level Topics Covered:
- Connecting to multiple data sources
- Transforming and consolidating data using Power Query
- Designing and optimizing data models
- Creating DAX calculations
- Creating and enhancing dynamic Power BI reports
- Sharing the reports with security
- Managing Power BI reports on the service
Understanding DP-605 Course
DP-605 course, which is now known as ‘Prepare and visualize data with Microsoft Power BI’, is basically a one-day fundamental course of Power BI. You can consider it as an introduction course to learn Power BI. It is best suited for people who are absolute beginners to Power BI and data analysis in general. You can consider roughly 20% of the PL-300 course is covered in DP-605.
So, if you are a beginner and want a kickstart before taking an associate-level certification course, consider taking DP-605 first. That will really ease your PL-300 learning experience, even if you don’t have the desired background.
High-level Topics Covered:
- Connecting to Data
- Basic transformations with Power Query
- Basic data modelling
- Understanding Power BI Visualizations
- Creating a basic Power BI report.
Key Differences

PL-300 dives deeper into building enterprise analytics solutions using Power BI, while DP-605 builds foundational knowledge in data cleaning, modelling, and visualizations.

Which Power BI Course Should You Choose?
Choosing between PL-300 and DP-605 depends on factors like your experience, roles, and goals.
Choose the PL-300 Course if:
- You are already familiar with Power BI platforms.
- You want to learn end-to-end analytics solutioning using Power BI
- You want to work as a data analyst or BI professional.
- You aim to build complex data models and reports.
- You want to become a Microsoft Certified Power BI Data Analyst
Choose DP-605 Course if:
- You are absolutely beginner to Power BI
- You want a structured introduction to Power Bi and analytics.
- You are a student or career switcher to data and BI.
- You want to learn Power BI fundamentals to apply in your day-to-day job
- You want a kick-start before you do an Associate level certification course.
Choosing Your Power BI Path
Thinks of DP-605 course and PL-300 course as complementary courses, not competing courses. The DP-605 course provides a solid understanding of Power BI’s basic features and is an excellent option for freshers or people without related data or BI backgrounds. The PL-300 course would be a wonderful option for people who are already data professionals or have a solid background in advanced Excel.
It is also worth noting that DP-605 is not a certification-based course. If you have no background and want to learn Power BI end-to-end, the best option is to start with the DP-605 course and then move on to the PL-300.
Choose the course that matches where you are today and where you want to be tomorrow.
