What is Amazon Comprehend?

Amazon Comprehend is a natural language processing (NLP) service on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Provides advanced natural language processing (NLP) capabilities to extract insights from unstructured text. It helps to do Sentiment analysis, entity recognition, and key phrase extraction. Comprehend uses machine learning and deep learning models to find the most important information in text, allowing you to process and analyze large amounts of text quickly and accurately. It is Developed for a wide range of applications like analyzing customer feedback, categorizing content, and automating customer service.

New Updates in AWS re:Invent on Amazon Comprehend

Amazon announced the new Amazon Comprehend Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) feature. With this feature, you can classify and extract entities from PDF documents, Microsoft Word files, and images directly from Amazon Comprehend without first extracting the text.

Why was the Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) feature required?

Many customers need to work with documents in a semi-structured format, such as scanned images of receipts or PDF tax returns. Until now, these customers had to first pre-process these documents and convert them to machine-readable text, which could compromise the quality of the document context. You can then use Amazon Comprehend to classify and extract entities from these preprocessed files.

How Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) solves the problem?

Amazon Comprehend for IDP now allows customers to process semi-structured and plain text documents such as pdf, docx, png, jpg, and tiff images with a single API call. This new feature combines OCR with Amazon Comprehends existing Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities to classify and extract entities from documents. The Custom Document Classification API allows you to organize your documents into categories or classes.

You can also use the custom entity detection API to extract entities from your documents, such as product codes or business-specific entities. For example, insurance companies can now process scanned customer claims with fewer API calls. You can use Amazon Comprehends Entity Recognition API to extract customer IDs from claims and use Custom Classification APIs to classify claims into different insurance categories (home, auto, or personal).

Amazon Comprehend for IDP API is available for real-time file inference and asynchronous batch processing of large document sets. This feature simplifies the document processing pipeline and reduces development effort.

Conclusion

Amazon Comprehend is a powerful and effective natural language processing tool. Accurately analyze text using advanced algorithms to extract meaningful insights. It can be used to extract meaningful insights quickly and easily from large data sets, providing businesses with valuable customer, product, and operational insights. Amazon Comprehend also has many features and tools that make it an ideal choice for NLP applications such as Sentiment analysis, entity recognition, and keyword extraction. Overall, Amazon Comprehend is an excellent choice for businesses looking for an efficient and effective way to analyze text and derive insights from it.

Now, with the addition of the Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) feature. Amazon Comprehend has become more powerful and has let users focus more on business productivity.
