The Challenge

The organization faced challenges with unreliable internet-based connectivity, including high latency, inconsistent network performance, lack of guaranteed bandwidth, and security concerns, which impacted real-time communication between smart meters (operating on telecom SIM networks) and AWS-hosted applications; additionally, the absence of a dedicated connection increased the risk of data loss, delays in push/pull operations, and potential downtime, ultimately affecting data reliability, system availability, and overall operational efficiency.

Solutions

  • Implemented AWS Direct Connect to establish a secure, private, and high-performance connection between on-premises infrastructure and AWS.
  • Deployed a hosted connection via Vodafone Idea at the Mumbai location (SFY52) to ensure reliable telecom integration with smart meter networks.
  • Configured dual connections (Primary and Secondary) with 100 Mbps each, providing a total 200 Mbps bandwidth for high availability and failover support.
  • Enabled redundancy architecture, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity even if one link fails.
  • Utilized VLAN configuration to logically separate and manage traffic securely across the connections.
  • Enabled Jumbo Frames to optimize data transfer efficiency and improve throughput for large data packets.
  • Designed the solution to support real-time push and pull communication between smart meters and AWS applications.
  • Ensured secure data transmission by routing traffic through private connectivity instead of the public internet.
  • Integrated telecom SIM-based smart meters (Vodafone, Idea, Jio) with backend systems through a stable and dedicated network path.
  • Provided scalable architecture, allowing future bandwidth upgrades and expansion as the number of smart meters increases.

Achieved 99.95% network availability with sub-50 ms latency, reducing unplanned downtime by 85% and enabling scalable, secure smart meter communication for 10,000+ devices through dedicated AWS Direct Connect infrastructure.
