The customer experienced elevated Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise licensing costs as both primary and passive secondary nodes in their multi-AZ Always On Availability Group were fully licensed on large vCPU EC2 instances. They managed a complex high-availability and disaster recovery environment requiring strict compliance controls, encrypted storage, Active Directory integration, least-privilege IAM policies, and continuous monitoring, with manual HA state tracking and no automated mechanism to detect active and standby SQL roles for cost optimization.
