The Challenge

DFOE had servers and other services running in AWS Cloud. They wanted to migrate their entire AWS infrastructure from the Old AWS account to have a new AWS account in the US-east-1 region (N. Virginia). The client wants baseline security implementation as a part of their new AWS account setup, making their new infrastructure more secure.

Solutions

  • Two servers have been successfully migrated and launched in a public subnet within the new AWS account by taking images of old servers. This process ensures minimal downtime and an easy transition to the new Production environment.
  • The migration process involves transferring critical data and services to the new account. Key services such as Amazon Elastic File System (EFS), Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Amazon SageMaker, and Amazon S3 Buckets have been successfully migrated to maintain data integrity and consistency.
  • Weekly backups are configured for Amazon EC2 servers with a 30-day retention policy. This ensures that historical data is preserved, providing a robust data recovery mechanism.
  • Daily backups are configured for the Relational Database Service (RDS) with a 12-day retention policy. This allows for point-in-time recovery and mitigates the risk of data loss in the event of data corruption or accidental deletions.
  • AWS CloudTrail is configured to record API calls and actions taken within the AWS environment. This provides a comprehensive trail of events, enhancing visibility.
  • Amazon CloudWatch is employed to monitor metrics and logs in real time. This ensures proactive identification and resolution of potential issues, contributing to the overall health and performance of the environment.
  • Amazon Guard Duty is enabled to continuously monitor for malicious activity and unauthorized access within the AWS environment. This provides an additional layer of defense against potential security threats.
  • AWS Inspector is employed to assess and analyze the security posture of applications running on Amazon EC2 instances. This proactive approach helps identify and address security vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
