Introduction
There are several advantages to moving a MySQL database from on-premises to the cloud, such as enhanced performance, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and high availability. With minimal downtime, Azure Database Migration Service (DMS) provides a simplified and effective method of migrating MySQL databases to Azure. It supports both homogeneous migrations (from MySQL to Azure Database for MySQL) and heterogeneous migrations (from MySQL to other database types).

Steps to Perform Migration Using DMS
- Set up DMS
The following phase in migrating your single server to a flexible server is to set up DMS once your target flexible server has been deployed and configured. - Register the Resource Provider
Check for and choose ‘Subscriptions’ in the Azure portal after logging in before launching your first DMS instance. - Create a Database Migration Service (DMS) instance
Using the Azure portal, go to + Create a resource, type in Azure Database Migration Service, and choose it from the list that appears. - Create a Migration Project
Locate the newly established service in the Azure interface, click to launch it, and then start a new migration project. Choose All services in the Azure interface, type in Azure Database Migration Service, and then click on Azure Database Migration Services. - Configure the Migration Project
- Provide the connection information for the source MySQL instance on the Select source screen, then click Next, and then Choose a target.
- Map the source and target databases for the migration on the Select Databases screen, then click Next: Configure migration settings.
- To make the source read-only, choose the Make Source Server Read Only option. However, note that this is a server-level configuration. If this option is chosen, not just the chosen databases but the entire server will be made read-only.
- Azure Database Migration Service automatically chooses the target database if the names of the source and target databases match.
- Monitor the Migration
To see the status of the number of tables completed, select Refresh on the migration activity screen to update the display. On the activity screen, you may choose the database name to view the current status of each table throughout their migration. To refresh the display, select Refresh.
Conclusion
Azure DMS offers powerful capabilities to manage continuous replication, track development, and address any problems. Furthermore, Azure Database for MySQL provides a completely managed environment, relieving businesses of the trouble of maintaining hardware, patches, and backups so they can concentrate on innovation and expanding their businesses.
In conclusion, a dependable and effective method that can assist companies in updating their data platform is to use Azure DMS to migrate on-premises MySQL databases to Azure. Organizations may benefit from cost savings, improved security, and cutting-edge cloud technologies by switching to Azure, which also opens the door for future scalability and digital transformation projects.
