AWS cost optimization through right-sizing and resource cleanup

Daffodill International University faced escalating AWS costs due to over-provisioned Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS instances, redundant storage resources, including unattached EBS volumes and obsolete snapshots, duplicate Amazon S3 data from application upgrades, and a lack of standardized account management practices leading to inefficient resource allocation.
• Conducted a detailed audit to identify and remove unused resources such as unassociated EBS volumes, obsolete snapshots, and inactive VPCs.
• Deleted the existing duplicate Amazon S3 bucket storing redundant Elastic Block Device (EBD) data to prevent unnecessary storage charges.
• Analyzed performance metrics and resized Amazon EC2 instances based on actual utilization. The production application server was migrated to an AMD-based instance type to reduce compute costs while maintaining performance.
• Modified the existing database instance type to db.r7i.2xlarge, aligning compute and memory capacity with application workload requirements for improved efficiency.
• Created and validated snapshots of Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS instances before restoring them into newly right-sized environments to ensure data consistency and rollback capability.
Achieved 30% cost reduction, 25% storage efficiency improvement, 20% performance boost, and 100% operational readiness with enhanced scalability for future campus expansion.
